In their experiment, Australian scientists have proposed to solve the good old puzzle: nine points must be connected by four straight lines without lifting the pencil from the paper.

I remember that the very first time I met this problem in the pages of the magazine “Nauka i zhizn” (“Science and Life”) in Soviet times: editorial argued that the problem has been proposed to hundreds of Drs, and only 5% of them have managed it.

That was the puzzle that Sydney University researchers used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed by them “safe and noninvasive” (without penetrating the body) method of stimulation of the temporal lobe of the brain, which for a short time improves understanding and memory of the subjects. In the end, after 10 minutes of stimulation 40% of the participants in the experiment could solve the task with nine points!

By the way, more than a year ago I wrote in this blog about the device to stimulate the brain designed by Alan Snyder. I still stand with my opinion: such methods should not be used as a “full-energizer” for managers, engineers, scientists, students and so on. It’s not just the immediate and long-term risks to health of the people who are constantly exposed to stimulation. Society, which in peacetime forces its members to go beyond the natural capacity of the human body is doomed to regress.

At the same time, one-time stimulation of the brain, in my opinion, can sometimes be useful. For example, it can help a person to “see” beyond his usual mental “ceiling”, learn to enjoy the process of thinking, to expand the personal experience of “mental victories.” But we talk only about situations when a person stopped at an impasse in his personal development. Or when he overcomes the effects of the disease. In all other cases, one can achieve success in a natural way. Just exercising. Simply allowing himself to think without restrictions.

I too, at one time managed the task with nine points, just “allowing” myself to solve it. After several unsuccessful attempts, I reread the problem statement. There was a sacramental phrase at the end such as not everyone is able to go beyond the usual range of solutions. This phrase has suddenly worked as a hint, I immediately found the answer. You had really to go “outside the circle”, in the literal and figurative sense (if you did not find a solution – you can peep what I mean).

The same thing happened to many of my friends. After the first unsuccessful attempts to more than half of them were easy to find a solution as soon as I mentioned, that they need to “go beyond the sample solutions.”

From this experience, I have derived a simple heuristic algorithm that helped me many times in my life:
1. find the limits of habitual in this problem;
2. look for a solution outside of these boundaries.
